Japanese Grammar How Tos: With Example Sentences



In Japanese, vowel 'I', is pronounced as 'e', and, vowel 'e', is pronounced as 'a'

Watashi - I, pronounced as watashe
Anata - you
Dare - who, pronounced dara

Doko - where
Neko - cat, pronounced nako
Iie - no, pronounced as eea
Hai - yes, pronounced hae
Desu- am , is, are - pronounced dess

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

Who is it? - Dare desu ka?

To show possession, the particle 'no' is used

Whose is it?- Dare no desu ka?


Whose cat is it?- Dare no neko desu?
It's my cat- Watashi no neko desu


Is this yours?
Anata no desu ka?

No, it's Anns
Iie, Ann san no desu

Neko desu- It's a cat or Those are cats.


Neko desu ka? - is it a cat?
Hai, neko desu - yes, it is a cat

To say "It's not a cat." or "I'm not Kim." you have to use these: dewa arimasen(formal), or janai desu(informal). They both mean the same thing.

Neko dewa arimasen. - It's not a cat ( Formal)
Neko janai desu. - It's not a cat (Informal)
Kim-san janai desu. - I'm not Kim(Informal)

To say your name
Watashi wa Kim desu - I am Kim
Kim desu - I am Kim
